One notable enhancement for the box, pleated leather sides called bellows, allowed the photographer to easily adjust the distance between the lens and the plane of focus. Some papers will also provide a lightfastness of 25 years or more when used with the appropriate printer and inks. Filters added to the front of a camera lens change the quantity or quality of the light that reaches the film. The other downside, of course, is that prolonged use causes batteries to drain quickly.

Macro lenses for 35-millimeter cameras extend the focusing range to a matter of inches.

The moveable mirror between the lens and the film reflects the image on a ground-glass viewing screen while the user adjusts the focus. The word photography comes from greek words and means "drawing with light. Flash aimed directly at the subject usually produces harsh, flat lighting. Flare is especially obvious when photographing with the sun in front of or just to the side of the lens.

Don't worry, they won't take it personally. For either printing process, prints are made on sheets of paper or plastic that have been coated with a light-sensitive emulsion. This feature is similar to that a slr cameras, allowing a shot to be intentionally under- or over-exposed to achieve a particular effect. After a short rinse, the film is submerged in fixer remover (4) to clear any remaining fixer from the film. A self-timer is a common feature, typically providing a 10-second delay between the time the shutter is activated and when the picture is taken and all modern day digital cameras have a built-in automatic flash, with a manual override option. Single-use cameras are also available in several advanced models-offering built-in flash, a waterproof body, or the ability to show panoramic views in extra-wide prints.

Today polaroid films are available in both black-and-white and color, for both special polaroid cameras and for standard-format cameras. Many digital cameras today offer selectable iso ratings from 50 to 400. Typically, four parameters can be set in this mode: White balance, exposure compensation, flash power and flash sync.
