An active autofocus system, used in most point-and-shoot cameras, emits either an infrared light beam or high-energy (ultrasonic) sound waves. Another type of filter, called a conversion filter, changes the color balance of light when it is radically different from that of the film. The kodak was one of the earliest handheld cameras. Active systems can be fooled by window glass, which interrupts their beams. The molecules in liquid crystals can move past each other relatively easily, much like molecules in a liquid. Some designs, called dedicated flash units, are made for use with a particular camera model and have circuitry that sets the shutter speed and illuminates a light in the viewfinder when the tube is ready to fire again.
